Turnip Royale by Dave Froude

Title: Turnip Royale
Medium: Oil on 11" x 14" wood panel $350.00

So here is the final version of this painting, before I started I had planned to do a complete white study but changed my mine just before I started, I pumped up the colour contrast a bit I also added a purple piece of paper under the objects which is hidden due to the eye level view this was to to cast purple reflections on everything.

Feel free to email me here if you want to chat or interested in buying this painting. Comes ready to hang and shipping is included in the price anywhere in North America.

Enjoy, Comments welcome.

Jobs & Books
still life painting of Steve Jobs biography

G. Boersma
acrylics on masonite
6" x 6" or 15 x 15 cm
2012
SOLD

It's impossible to walk into a bookstore and not see the face of Steve Jobs. His biography is everywhere. I wouldn't be surprised if the same happens to Whitney Houston. It's such a strange phenomena that I just had to paint it.

kind regards, Gerard

In the corner of the bookstore I spotted these two friends. Whenever I look at a book like this it never cease to amaze me how one's life can be reduced to a small pile of paper. It tells the whole story, but then again the story isn't the same as the person.

I jokingly entitled this painting of a book about Magritte after one of his most famous paintings of a pipe. However, on the cover here you see his work Tree With Crescent Moon. On the right you a book about Kirchner, the expressionist painter.

Painting "Iced Coffee" Oil by Mary Hughes

8" x 8" "Iced Coffee"

Just finished! This one was fun to paint because I love to paint shiny things! Glass is so much fun to paint. It's like a fun puzzle, searching for what will make it stand out, glow, shine, shimmer. The cream is starting to explode in a swirl down deep in the glass.

Cup of Joe Painting by Mary Hughes

8" x 8" "Cup Of Joe"

Will be on display at Il Primo Espresso Cafe in Wichita Feb. 24.

What a week! Two of the paintings I'm working on have been fighting me. Tonight I excitedly started putting gentle snow falling in a forest scene and after lots of careful detail I could just have well signed my name with a large green crayon and been done with it! But I'm not giving up! I love the challenge (I tell myself) and will work on it until I'm satisfied. Hope to have it finished before summer!

Somehow people often compare my works to that of Edward Hopper. I feel honored they do so and I thought it would be fun to create a bookshelf painting with a book about Hopper at its center. A detail of his best known painting Nighthawks is on the cover.

From one to two by Cristina Dalla Valentina

These apples join up with the pears of One up, two down and the mandarins of By twos (always this "two"... is there some hidden meaning?) ...
Here the texture of the background shines through most clearly in the pulp of apples cut in half, and creates blobs that seem almost "wrong", but that intrigue me a lot...

By twos by Cristina Dalla Valentina

By twos - watercolors and fluid acrylics on paper - 20" x 12,7"

Price: € 130
Info: Gallery

By twos - details

In this painting I used the same technique of the pears in One up, two down: liquid acrylics for the background, and watercolors for the tangerines.
The texture of the peels comes both from the manipulation of the watercolors (for example by spattering water on the color while it's drying) and from the variegated background created with the liquid acrylics, which, though transparent, are however permanent and are not disturbed by successive washes.

As with pears, I wanted to get an "old botanical illustration" look, but without pushing me too hard for realism... almost a game between precision and imagination.
I don't know if I succeeded, I leave the answer to you...
but I believe that the series of these fruits will not stop here, I'm having too much fun!

He's standing right behind me isn't he? by Dave Froude

Title: He's standing right behind me isn't he? Oil on 11" x 14" wood panel $350

Well I tried to remember the lessons learned from my last failed painting, and I wanted to make sure I stayed focused with this one, paying attention to value and colour relationships and thankfully this came together really quickly, with no real reworking involved. Love the way this pear looked when I picked it up, looked like it was on fire as 1 side is a very warm orange.

Feel free to email me here if you want to chat or interested in buying this painting. Comes ready to hang and shipping is included in the price anywhere in North America.

Vermeer Books- Still Life Painting Of Art Books By Gerard Boersma

This painting combines two things I love doing most in life: reading and painting.

In the center of this bookshelf you see a book about one of my favorite artists Johannes Vermeer. His Milkmaid is on the cover. You can view a detail picture of it below.

The museum show in Joure looks great! I spent the latter of the day decorating, it always takes more time than I anticipate. Fortunately, the museum people were just great. They assisted me along the way and I like to thank them for it! I'll post a couple of pics soon!

kind regards, Gerard

please keep in mind that the actual size of Vermeer's Milkmaid is about the same as that of a post stamp

Spring Freesias Posy - Coloured Pencil painting by Marion Hedger

"Spring Freesias" on blue colorfix paper. 24x30cm

Along with the daffodils the freesias are some of the first flowers to appear in the garden, and they gave it such a lift after the bareness of winter. I picked a bunch and their colours inspired me to paint them. I had some dark blue coloured colorfix paper and decided to try coloured pencils. I am not very experienced with coloured pencils but was pleased with the outcome.

I like working on a dark background as it can make the colours 'sing' and often use dark backgrounds for my acrylic and pastel paintings. With the pencils it was difficult to establish the whites, but they did eventually come forward.
