Autumn trial by Cristina Dalla Valentina

Autumn trail - watercolor on paper - 15,7" x 11,8"
Price: € 130

Info: Gallery and shop

And how can you have restraint in these days of autumn?
How to put a stop to the colors that are pushing to finish on the paper?
How to lead them with a firm hand to a controlled result?
I lack discipline, and I don't know what to do...

This is my first all knife painting from a very old photograph I found in the back of a drawer. These gorges are typical of the landscape around here and make interesting subjects to paint.

Old Country Road - landscape

"Old Country Road"
oil on canvas

Driving through the countryside, I am always getting distracted when I see these old farm roads.
It usually makes me wonder where it goes or what is at the end.

A place for your soul by Cristina Dalla Valentina

A place for your soul
Watercolor on paper
15" x 11"

This country road has inspired me many times, and still inspires me to paint it ...
Also you have a special place that speaks to your soul?

_______
I'm an artist from Verona, Italy.
In my paintings I transfer the emotions and the feelings aroused by the life around me. Among my favorite subjects are people, landscapes of cities and countryside, trees, skies. The observation of reality first passes through my camera lens, then from the contemplation of colors and shapes, to finally express itself in the play of the watercolor on the paper.
Painting is like looking me in the mirror and seeing who I am: I live to paint, and I paint to live...

BUTTERFLY BUSH AND BEE BALM

BUTTERFLY BUSH AND BEE BALM
12" x 9"
oil on canvas board

Summer is in its full glory in my garden at the moment.  Unfortunately it is so hot that it is hard to really enjoy it.  Luckily I can still paint in my air conditioned studio and enjoy the colors and textures at a remove from the actual garden, which is steaming and full of insects who are out for blood.

Nature is beautiful and treacherous.  The human race has gone overboard to surpress and control nature for our own pleasure and safety.  We do whatever we can to change things to suit ourselves without suffient reflection about what the chain reaction of these changes will mean to ourselves and other creatures in the long run.  As a result there is very often not a 'long run' for many species and it may be our own survival will go the way of so many other forms of life.

In the meantime we have art and music to feed our spirit when nature is too harsh and we want to sit back and pretend all is well.

Urban Landscape 7 by Cristina Dalla Valentina

Urban Landscape 7 - Traffic lights in the sunset
watercolor on paper
18" x 13"

Sometimes I feel in this way: stuck at a stop, and I can't go on.
I am blocked, I can neither go forward nor back, and in the meanwhile I watch others rushing away.

But I know one thing for sure: after the red, comes the green...

Between the channels by Cristina Dalla Valentina

Between the channels
watercolor on paper
15,4" x 11,4"

This is a typical landscape of my surroundings: tree-lined paths between irrigation channels, farmsteads amidst the countryside, hills in the background ...
Luckily, despite my neighborhood is slowly suffocating in cement, I can still get to a piece of nature in fifteen minutes of bike... this is an advantage of living in the suburbs, as long as it lasts!

Between earth and sky - by Cristina Dalla Valentina

Between earth and sky
watercolor on paper
13,4" x 19,3"

Here the protagonist is the sky, but also that tiny tree in the greenery, lonely and almost lost in the immensity of the landscape.
But he shouldn't arouse in you feelings of sadness, or a sense of abandonment.
He, actually, is happy and delighted to be there, between the earth and the sky, to enjoy the warmth of the sun and the caress of the wind.

An afternoon, in June - by Cristina Dalla Valentina

2011 06 - Un pomeriggio, a giugno - 25 x 35 cm
An afternoon, in June
watercolor on paper
9,8" x 13,7"

Do you know those summer hours, in the late afternoon, when the shadows begin to lengthen, but the light contrasts are still sharp... when the colors are warmer and the air a little cooler...
I was excited by that blade of yellow - green light in the fields, behind the dark, almost black tree...

Mountain Scene Variations on a theme -2 by Marion Hedger

This is the second variation on a theme challenge. On Fisher sanded paper. I did not underpaint - normally I underpaint with pastel and rub the first layer in. Decided on a purple/pink look this time. I Not sure about the sky though! Believe it or not I was going to use a hatching technique on this - but the painting took over

The 'ground rules' were to see how many different ways the same subject could be tackled, using the same size support and in a set time limit of 40 minutes.

One, maybe two (2) by Cristina Dalla Valentina

One, maybe two
One, maybe two (2)
 watercolor on paper
20" x 11,4"

When I painted One, maybe two (2), I initially wanted to explore the contrast between the blue-purple sky and the yellowish trunks ... then other colors squeezed in: green, burnt sienna, and a touch of pink.
They screamed so much that I had to listen to them...

Embrace 5 (Intertwined) by Cristina Dalla Valentina

Embrace 5 (Intertwined)
watercolor
10" x 18,7"

This painting is part of my trees embraces series.

Sometimes the trees branches are so closely intertwined that you are unable to distinguish the one from the other...

Below are some details of the painting:

the light on the foliage...

 two friends embracing each other...

and a door between the trunks.

Before night falls by Cristina Dalla Valentina

Before night falls
watercolor on paper
12,9" x 12,9"

«The most poetic times of the day for the landscape artist (and perharps for anyone) are dawn and dusk, the beginning and the end of light. [...] In the evening, the last moments of late light succumb to the spreading shadows as the sun is swallowed by the horizon. Color drains off the landscape inch by inch, reclaimed finally by the sky. This is dusk, when the sun is gone, but for a brief time, the sky holds out a magenta and alizarin valedictory to the day. It is when hedgerows darken as woody shrubs give up their final warm shaft of light. Quiet pervades, and after the last bird song lifts into the cooling air the frogs take up their chorus, a prelude to the soft nightlong music of peepers and cicadas. No more sunlit ripples on the pond. Night quiets, then claims the landscape, a metaphor for rest, or for welcome death. When light disappears, we are also faced with a melancholy reminder that we must give up our claim on the day».
Elizabeth Mowry, The Poetic Landscape
