I have just managed to get a better photograph of this painting (well remembered to do so to be honest) and thought I would tell you about the first time I got to know a rottweiler. It was many years ago, when we lived in London near Hyde Park. A couple who lived near us had two young rottweilers and the wife told me that her husband had wanted two guard dogs - they were rather wealthy! - but she had wanted two cuddly, pretty dogs and so they settled on rottweilers as being the perfect match. Well, I never discovered how they were at their guard duties, although I suspect very good, but as cuddly, pretty dogs they were perfect and certainly very friendly to those invited to their house, just wanting to play!

It's a shame rottweilers have developed a reputation for aggressiveness because although very strong, when they are properly brought up, they are lovely dogs.

I have now opened an Etsy store to sell some of my daily paintings. See Artbymarion on Etsy

I am starting with my small gouache (5"x7") paintings. These have all been mounted on black MDF to give a border and to fit into a standard photo frame, as can be seen on in the photo. All these paintings have been varnished with two coats of acrylic varnish to protect the surface, making them very durable. This also means that they can be mounted without glass.

It doesn't need to be labeled as a surreal piece. I've seen ravens about this size in Arizona and New Mexico. The room could be smaller than an average room. But it is surreal in that it has a dream like quality.
I was stuck with this painting for a while because I couldn't decide if I should add more detail, but in the end I wanted to suggest a feeling rather than create a photo-real painting.

I seem to enjoy the concept of painting birds in chairs. My painting "Raven" is one you might also want to see.

Here's another celestial piece that just seemed to paint itself....just flowed from brush to canvas. I am hoping that some of you out there are being inspired to explore intuitive painting in this way.

Well at last I am starting to recover from a horrible bout of 'flu and would like to thank those who sent good wishes.

Before I get working on commissions again, I thought I'd like to create a painting which would show one of the characteristics of dogs which I value very highly and this is their quality of spirit. I do believe that where dogs have lived in such very close proximity to humans for so very long a time, that they have developed a special quality of soul and are capable of a great depth of emotion which we do not normally associate with any other creatures than humans. I think the expression on this dog demonstrates this well.

Technique VS Idea, Ideas, Ideas

As a realist artist I find it funny to see that modern art nowadays puts more emphasis on ideas rather than on technique. In a documentary about a leading school of art in the UK I even heard an art teacher proclaiming that technical skill doesn’t even matter, it’s all about ideas, ideas, ideas!

Well, having a good idea for a painting sure is important. Art should capture thoughts and feelings and having an idea what you want to say or express as an artist sure is the way to go. But saying that form and technical skill just isn’t important sounds outright ridiculous to me.

Let’s say you happen to be a singer and you got the greatest idea for a song ever. You pen it down, the melody sounds like heaven and the words are just like poetry. It’s just great!

But when you’re on stage performing this great song and you just happen to suck at singing, do you know what happens? You get booed off the stage and if you really stink people start throwing beer bottles at you. Or tomatoes and rotten eggs for that matter.

But with painting it’s a whole different ballgame. If you got this great idea, but your performance is just as bad as the singer’s: it’s called a style. People don’t boo you off the stage, they start throwing panties at you for God’s sake.

They appreciate ‘your style’ for your new take on things and daring or innovative way of working. They actually think it’s good or at least are so shocked and confused they're seriously considering it might be good.

No, it isn’t, let’s keep things in perspective here: it’s just a great idea badly executed. It’s like a singer with a great song, but who sings painfully off key. Who enjoys that? I for one can’t and never will.

That’s why technical skill is still important and it always will be. I’m not saying that artists have to work in a realistic style, but they should master their medium and develop their own unique style. To the max, no cutting corners and no slacking whatsoever.

In the end it’s visual art: it has to be visual attractive as well. Combine this with a great idea and you got great art. Now let’s cut the crap and start painting again. Please.

Painting these celestial pieces is actually the style and subject matter that comes most naturally for me. It is always an adventure and surprise when I paint spontaneously in this manner. I never know where the painting is going and how it will turn out...

I'm not ready to begin to paint them much larger, though....even though I want to. That time will most likely come when I have sold my house and found a new abode closer to Saratoga.

This was painted in response to the wetcanvas.com floral forum monthly challenge. I used my own reference taken at Montreal Botanical Gardens a couple of years ago. I used a blending technique where I placed the paint onto the canvas and then used a soft brush to blend that paint together. It was painted alla prima parat from the 'spots' which were added once it was fairly dryish.

Last weekend I was in New York visiting my daughter and while wandering around Soho, before meeting her for dinner, I came across this outdoor flower shop with each tulip individually wrapped against the stormy night and all the flowers encased in filmy paper. It seemed such a tender scene I wanted to catch it in paint. Backing up to take a snap shot I ran into this sign.

Now I could only imagine a hoard of painters complete with berets and easels being banned from the spot by an irate shop owner who wanted to keep all the beauty for his customers. Here in flagrant disobedience is my painting.

In the Hague I saw this wonderful scene of people riding a tram. The trams used to be all yellow brownish with red stripes but I guess advertising can change all that. But I definitely like the blue though.

This painting is based on my Nephew Logan... This is my first portrait where I did not pre-draw the face. I used a brush to quickly sketch out the general outline and eye location and then proceeded with painting of the little dude. My goal was to come close to the likeness , but not to stress about it... For me painting people is much more of a stretch then painting furries - therefore I need more practice..practice...practice...

This is now the third time that I painted this little pup. I don't know what it is about him that makes me want to paint him, maybe it's the sad look that he projects onto the viewer. I have been very much under the weather the last few weeks. It's nasty cold will that not leave me alone... Painting this little bugger did lift my spirits a bit.

I also have the pear #5 on my easel. That one should be posted tomorrow - so stay tuned!

This painting was created on a smooth canvas textured board. The painting has a notch on the back which makes it easy to display with just a small nail.

'Toward Heaven" was created spontaneously. I didn't know what I wanted to paint and simply dipped my brush in the first color that I was attracted to and began to push paint around....I continued painting in this way until the painting developed. There are two little forms that appear to be birds flying upward toward the bottom right...can you see them? I'm happy with the resulting piece.

Just off the easel!! This painting was done from my photos on a trip to the San Luis area of Colorado on Wild Horse Mesa. These horses (although I don't think they were wild, just free-ranging) were busily grazing amongst the sagebrush. Capturing the mood, was one I very much wanted to convey; one of beauty, grace and magnificence.
