Here, where I live - we have cardinals that reside with us all winter. Their bright colors are so evident on the snowiest and coldest days. I often wonder how they survive, but they seem to do quite well! I also see their presence as a beautiful expression of how God provides for our needs in the not-so-plentiful seasons of life!

last year. I changed many things in this one to make it
my collectors original. In this composition I used a
different piano, candelabra, couple, flowers, floor and the
two paintings on the wall. Most of the rest is very similar.

Well this week I think I have spent more time with auto mechanic then in my studio and it looks like I have to go back tomorrow, finding a good mechanic is turning out to be quite a challenge, would be nice if they would work for a painting or 2 instead of cash. Still did manage to finish this one, I think the title took longer then the painting.

It's a summer day and this mother duck was watching over her babies as they napped on a dock on the teal lake. The sun was shining and the birds were sneaking a peak at us as we drifted by. This oil painting measures 16" x 20". It's a streched canvas and the edges are painted for frameless display. It's signed and dated by the artist.

Today was the last day for my watercolor landscape class. For our last painting, I had them do a scene similar to the above image. It was a simple painting of birch trees in winter.
I really enjoyed everyone in the class. They were a mix of all levels but were very supportive of each other. I look forward to seeing many of them again in the New Year.

Landscape Impression 1- gouache painting by Marion Hedger
This is an ongoing project to extend my knowledge of gouache. I have
always enjoyed those ethereal watercolour paintings that suggest the
information. As I was playing around with the gouache I wondered if I
could achieve that effect with gouache. Here is my first painting in the series:

12.5x17.5cm (5"x7") Gouache on canvas board
I coated the
canvas with a ground of dark orangey coloured acrylic. Then roughly
mapped in the design with the gouache and gave it a spritz with water,
turning the support now and again to let the paint run but generally
letting it go where it wanted to. I then worked back into it,
ocassionally spritzing again. In the final pass I tried to recapture
some of the highlights as these had sunk into the support and some areas
were qute dull where the paint had run. It was difficult to know how
much reworking to do and how much could be achieved with gouache. When
finished I varnished it with spray acrylic gloss varnish which lifted
some of the dulled colours.

I'd originally painted this piece in a 6" x 6" format and it sold almost immediately to a collector who has one child. She said it represented her beautiful family. I liked this painting so much and decided to paint it again in a much larger version. Another example of a rare fruit find with the wonderful stem and leaf on the momma pear. Wish I could have preserved it forever. Being that I knew it wasn't possible, I ate it...mmmmm

Eventide was an enjoyable painting to paint because it is from a photograph during my favorite time of year- the summer solstice. I painted it over a cold rainy couple of days and tried to recreate what summer feels like. I also wanted to capture the colors of the sunset over the water and the reflections of the boats.

Here's another sort of cute apple for you today. It seems to have a personality, doesn't it? I was so happy to discover this little apple with its long, thick stem and wonderful leaves still attached. I couldn't wait to get home and paint it!
It is a beautiful temperate Sunday morning here in Saratoga Springs, NY......Too beautiful to waste behind a computer and I've already got upper back/shoulder burn.... I'm going into town to walk around and hopefully have a new adventure or see something beautiful I didn't notice before...or maybe another piece of fruit with a leaf attached....a rare find....

These two 5x7 originals are actually Christmas cards for my family and friends. They are painted in acrylics on gessoed paper. The final product is varnished with semi-gloss for a 3-D look. Once the holidays are over, these little paintings will look FABULOUS matted and framed.
