Explore The North Paintings- Straight Line

Straight Line

Explore The North

It's my pleasure to announce a new series of 12 paintings I made for music and literary festival Explore The North. In an imaginary museum I show people looking at paintings with typical elements of the Frisian mentality. The paintings are laudotory, humoristic, but at times downright critical.

10.000 newspapers containing only the 12 paintings will be spread across my hometown during the festival on november 25 and 26. On these 2 days the paintings are also on display at the Grote Kerk, not that far from my studio. I had a great time creating these new works and I'll post 4 of these in the weeks leading to the festival.

Straight Line

The first painting shows a woman looking at a minimal picture of just a straight line. This line represents the straightforwardness of my fellow Frisians. We're known to be stiff, stubborn and not easily upset.

Because the line continues outside the picture you can also see this as the vast empty space my province has so much of. The line then represents the horizon. A Frisian teenager however might compare the line to that of a flatline of a heart-lung machine. Nothing to do here and it sure will never change. However, dullness is good for creativity, you have to do something!

kind regards, Gerard

Auction

If you're interested in purchasing this painting or any of the other Explore The North Paintings just place your bid by email. All paintings have a startprice of just 500,- euro or 690,- USD. The auction closes at midnight, December 5th, 2011.

A part of the proceeds of the auction goes to Jeugd Theater School Meeuw. This youth theatre school in my hometown Leeuwarden recently has been burgled and could use some extra funds right now!

Illumined Garden was painted spontaneously from my imagination. I love painting in this way. This painting invokes such a sense of peace. Viewers have told me that it seems to pull them right into the light. I had this painting on my studio wall intending to finish it. People would comment on how much they liked it and when I'd say "it isn't finished yet..." the consistent response was "don't do anything more to it."....so I didn't....

Today's Quotation: "I'm enjoying the most perfect tranquillity, free from all worries, and in consequence would like to stay this way forever, in a peaceful corner of the countryside like this."
-Claude Monet

This is an older painting that I re-worked the background and the hair on...It's fun to take older work that is so-so and breathe new life into...

No Pig left Behind, painting by Delilah Smith
About This Painting:Pig Paintings are always fun for me. Growing up on a farm in Michigan I never grow tired of painting animals. When it comes to feeding time at the pig pen I can tell you that no Pig is left out of getting his fill. I titled this one with a little tongue-in-cheek humour.

Blue Bottle by Dave Froude

Title: Blue Bottle
Medium: Oil on 16 x 20 wood panel

This piece is a little larger than I usually work on but it came together really quickly for a change, it hasn't changed very much from the first post the other day, however there where a few structure issues that I needed to address as well as some value changes for a bit of clarity. I love this blue bottle such a great colour, before I started this one, I was watching some YouTube videos from some artists I like and most had a similar way of painting and so I thought I would try and the way they painted, so I used a soft bristle brush for most of this and pushed the paint around and blended a little more but did managed to keep some broad brush stokes in there, overall it has a nice soft feel to it.

I have had some issues photographing this one however, as it has been raining for the last few days so I couldn't take it out to take a photo.

On another note, I am really excited as I entered a juried show with the Colour and Form Society, I submitted 2 paintings and imagine my surprise both where selected today, the show runs from November 3rd to the 25th with the opening reception on November 6th from 2 to 5 pm, so if you are in the area stop by it is at ETOBICOKE CIVIC CENTRE ART GALLERY @ 399 The West Mall, Etobicoke.

Enjoy

WHITE DRESSAGE STALLION in PALETTE KNIFE by OLGA WAGNER

I had another 16x20 canvas that was ready to..Actually, it was a failed painting from few months ago, that made for a perfect surface to work on using palette knives. The hardest part of this painting was deciding on the color combo for the background. Originally, I was going for something with more drama, but in the end I decided on this eye pleasing combo.

I've painted a few other plums on this fabric pattern in the past which have all sold. I love painting the deep red, burgundy and violet colors of the plum.

I haven't painted since moving the paintings and equipment from my studio on Beekman St. back home. I'm never quite 'right' unless I am painting consistently. The challenge has been to reintegrate everything into my studio here and keep it looking fairly organized until my house sells...not an easy task. I plodded along earlier today for a few hours, took a nap, and am exquisitely procrastinating getting back in there. Wish I could just wave a magic wand and have it all done....

I am planning to have an Open Studio here November 12 & 13. I will provide more details as we get closer. Hope to see some of you there!

Mountain flowers by Marion Hedger in Pen and Wash

These two small postcard sized paintings were painted for the October Plant Parade challenge in the wetcanvas.com floral forum. The challenge was to choose high altitude wild flowers to paint.

Both these paintings are of flowers from the Pyrenees Mountains. Doing these brought back memories of my holiday in the Pyrenees a few years ago. It was May and the mountains were covered in all sorts of tiny wild flowers - just breathtaking. In particular, the gentian was very striking with it's brilliant blue.

Sardinian Sunshine by Helen Read

Sardinian Sunshine,  6x6" Oil on canvas

ready to frame

For the month of November only,  this painting is featured for
$30.00

This painting is one that I did for Virtual Paintout.  One uses Google Street View to find a spot worthy of painting - and then a painting is done (thus the name - Virtual Paintout)
I really liked this view particularly for the dramatic shadows on the side of the white wall.
The whole thing gave the feeling of being in sun drenched Sardinia!
For the month of November only, this painting is featured at $30.  If it doesn't sell, it will revert to its usual price of $100.   Maybe it would make a nice gift!   Or maybe it would be perfect for that small space or shelf that needs some original art!   Either way, its ready to be shipped to its new home!

BOATS AT FISHERMAN'S WHARF PAINTING IN PROGRESS BY ELIZABETH BLAYLOCK

11 X 14 OIL ON CANVAS
Not quiet finished with this one....near tho. Fisherman's Wharf  is full of great boat scenes to paint.  You would think I would pick something simpler to warm up after not painting for 8 days... the longest  time in three years!
Since I got back there has been one ordeal after another to deal with... besides the catch-up things.   Taking a vacation  seems to be more work than it's worth.  Next time I may just check in to a beach side condo here  in Gulf Shores.

It's snowing in Massachusetts and she's painting ladybugs? I'm not sure why either except I've been wanting to paint insects and my eyes can only handle the cute ones for a long stretch of time. I plan to graduate to the "uglier" ones. . in time.

Autumn Landscape Oil Painting, "Autumn Mist" by Marina Petro

Autumn Mist

Original landscape oil painting on canvas

This painting was inspired partially from a photograph as well as memory of landscapes such as this I  driving around the countryside in Autumn. Observers have commented that this painting is 'haunting' and 'mysterious.'

To get the effect of mist on the trees in the background, I painted them in dark initially and allowed the paint to dry. Then, I began to gently paint over them with light gray, until I achieved the effect I wanted.  It seemed easier to approach it this way rather than mix the gray color and apply it directly to paint in the trees.

At the moment i am periodically looking out my window waiting for the predicted 4-6 inches of snow to begin falling....ugh...a bit too early for my liking and just at the height that needs plowing. We've already had a light snowfall on Friday as you can see from the pic below.....and it's still October!

PALETTE KNIFE BRIGHT WHITE HORSE PAINTING by OLGA WAGNER

After finishing the lily in powerful shades of red, I wanted to continue with more reds. This painting is based on the Venice Horses of St. Mark, the bronze statues of chariot race horses with the cutest roached manes. Love...Love the power of this color palette. I wander what this would look like on a much larger scale...

Callas by Cristina Dalla Valentina

Callas - watercolor on paper - 11,8" x 22"

Prezzo / price: € 130

You can buy this painting on my blog
or you can email me for information

When I started I thought I was going to paint white flowers...

But while I gazed the calyxes of these graceful callas, at a certain point I began to see colored shadows and unexpected shades in their white...

Calle - particolare
Callas - details

In the white callas I found
  • a pure cobalt blue
  • an orange pink
  • an iridescent gray
  • a greenish ochre
  • a merely hinted mauve...

... how many other colors are hidden inside white?
