Henri's Harem by k Madison Moore , Insoired by Matisse

Henri's Harem

Painting Inspired by Henri Matisse

©kMadisonMooreMkM2011

12 x 16   Oil painting on canvas

Art with Art Series

I was reading about Matisse's Models and came up with this
idea. In this painting I did my take on many of his models.
I made many color and patten changes and changed the facial
features. The flowers, vases, checkerboard, table, furniture
and wall patterns are inspired by different Matisse paintings.

I have such an attraction for Matisse. He was so passionate about
his work. He used such bold colors and mixed patterns with
patterns and painted table tops facing the viewer as it was more
important for the elements on the table to be painted.
He had a passion for painting woman in sheer tops and harem
pants. Maybe he wished for a harem...or maybe he had one!
He was hard to model for and went through many,
many models. See a great article I have included below
from the Smithsonian about Matisse and his models.
I thought it would be great to give Henri his Harem lying
around sipping wine while Henri peeps in.
Enjoy " Henri's Harem"

 Matisse and His Models

The French expression for thunderbolt—coup de foudre—means “love at first sight,” with all the undertones of violence and risk that were an intrinsic part of Matisse’s passion for painting. Anxiety and dread hung over his studio sessions. Toward the end of his life he told an interviewer that each canvas began as a flirtation and ended up as a rape. He said it was himself, not his subject—or rather it was the feelings his subject aroused in him—that had to be raped. The subject itself could be fruit, flowers or a fabric screen, as often as a human sitter. The young women who posed for him all learned to live and work in the atmosphere of almost unbearable tension generated by Matisse’s effort to express his emotions on canvas—an effort that drained all his strength.

Matisse’s reputation as a Modernist leader was built on this sort of shock. So his followers saw it as an unforgivable betrayal when he moved from Paris to Nice ten years later and started painting good-looking young women in transparent tops and harem pants lounging on cushioned divans.

Focused Morning by Dave Froude

Title: Focused Morning
Medium: Oil on 9 x 12 Wood Panel

Meet Misty a little focused on something moving of in the distance, Misty was my Wife and I's first Cat early in our relationship. Spent a year at the Humane Society before we saw her and brought her home, she was 10 when we met and lived to the age of 20. She was a bit off though but still we loved her. She always seemed a bit angry and at least for me. The likeness is really good, for a first attempt at a portrait. My first attempt she looked a bit to angry so I softened the eyes a bit and also but a little emphasis on the eyes.

Currently this painting is not for sale, at least for the time being. So if you really like this let me know as I may be willing to let someone else enjoy this painting.

Enjoy

Yin Yang (Two Tigers Caressing) by Anne Zoutsos

Yin Yang - 7" x 5" oil on hardboard/masonite

SOLD

This painting took rather a long time to paint owing to the patterning of the stripes and the muscular bodies of the tigers - it needed a considerable amount of attention not to get lost amongst all those patterns! It reminds me so much of the Chinese Yin Yang symbol which I am sure you will all know but just in case you don't here is an example:
I've realised that although I know the symbol so well, I know very little of its meaning other than it represents the balance of nature and life. It will be intesting to do some research and learn more about it - I always enjoy learning something new.

I find this painting harmonious and very pleasingly balanced - I hope you do too!

This painting is available to purchase for £118 (plus £7 shipping worldwide)

This painting is straight off the easel and still very wet - it will need several days at least before it can be shipped.

AFTER THE STORM

AFTER THE STORM
8" x 6"
oil on canvas

ocean city vacation 2011:

It really is an ecstatic experience to walk on the beach in the very early morning and watch the sun come up.  So much untouched space with nothing but the birds and the sea creatures and that great rolling ocean.  It reminds me of this stanza from Byron's poem.

Roll on, thou deep and dark blue Ocean – roll! Ten thousand fleets sweep over thee in vain; Man marks the earth with ruin – his control Stops with the shore; -- upon the watery plain The wrecks are all thy deed, not does remain A shadow of man’s ravage, save his own, When for a moment, like a drop of rain, He sinks into thy depths with bubbling groan, Without a grave, unknell’d, uncoffin’d, and unknown.

Cherries by Leslie Redhead

Cherries
Egg Tempera
6x6"

My studio class for my Masters courses at the university this past summer was about play and experimentation. It was self directed and it was to get us thinking about what makes us creative so we can inspire creativity in others.
One of my goals was to do something I have been wanting to try for years- egg tempera. I have always loved the look of it and how luminous and rich it can be. For those of you that do not know what egg tempera is, it is the mixing of pigment with egg yolk. It is older than oil painting.
Cherries is one of the studies that I did in the egg tempera. I experimented with a couple of different surfaces while I figured out the tempering of the paint. This is on watercolor paper.

Points North by Helen Read

Featured for the month of September
$30.00 thru 9/30/11
Points North,  5x7" Acrylic on canvas
©2011, Helen Read
ready to frame

As a feature each month, I've been offering a small painting at a fraction of its normal selling price. In the past 2 months since I've started this practice, its seemed to be a very popular idea with everyone!  These small paintings have sold quickly and those who have purchased them got a great price on a small original.

This painting was one I did with Virtual Paintout.  A place somewhere on earth is given each month and using Google Maps, we find a place and paint!   This one comes from the area of Fairbanks, AK,
a beautiful wooded country road with a few small flowers in bloom along the roadside.

After the end of September, if this hasn't sold, it will be available for its full price of $100.  I hope it will go at its "featured price" ~ its ready to send! And I'd love to ship it out!

Egyptian Arabian Horse Painting, Equine Art by Theresa Paden

 Egyptian Arabian Horse Portrait
"Egyptian Gold"
Contemporary Equine Painting
By Theresa Paden
20 x 16" Acrylic on canvas

"Egyptian Gold" was created with many layers of semi-transparent
acrylic paint, and that's what gives it the look of shiny gold.

Our daughters used to ride our next-door-neighbor's Egyptian Arabian
horse, named Butterfly, when they were little and first learning to
ride, as well as take care of horses. Butterfly, just like the horse
in this painting, had that beautiful dishy face and large, kind eye that
Arabian horses are known for. She was also very patient, and let them
fawn over her for hours, brushing and braiding her mane!

This painting is from my 50 Horses in 50 Days series
which benefits rescued horses.
15% of the sales from the series are donated to
California Coastal Horse Rescue in Ojai
Check out their website to learn more about their wonderful facility.

The first time I visited New Mexico was in 1988, when my
soon-to-be husband took me to visit his family in Albuquerque. I fell in love
with everything about the Southwest. The colors, the history, the culture,
the people, the land, and the architecture. The light is incredible and
is the reason so many artists choose to live there. The bison in my painting
stands, illuminated by the light and colors of the Southwest.

"California's Amazing Bounty" Show with Terry Romero Paul

Just wanted to let you know of an exciting show I will be in from September 17 to November 5. The opening reception is Saturday, September 17, from 6:00 to 10:00. This is a wonderful gallery in the new hip area of the city of San Fernando. La Galeria Gitana, 120 N. Maclay Ave. St. E, San Fernando, 818-898-7708.
I have six paintings in this show. All are painted within the theme of show, "California's Amazing Bounty". I have depicted orange groves, vineyards and still life paintings combining the two. No dessert paintings this time. ;-)
