Keeping with yesterday's family/fruit theme....here is another family portrait...pears this time. I was very happy to have found the baby yellow pear with leaf still attached. This would make a great "new baby" gift...at least I think it would...

Seashell Collection

These card size paintings in pastel and watercolour are being used as a card series for Audubon Stores, this is the third series I have created for them. The backs of the cards have a complete description of the shell and its habitat.

My sea shell cards are in book stores, gift shops and stores through the South East, Caribbean and Hawaii.
Many people frame the cards as they are on a very heavy gloss paper stock, archival, suitable for framing.

Most of these shells in the collection are found in the Caribbean, Florida & East Coast, California and Hawaii.

A wonderful place to look up your favorite beautiful shell http://seashells.org/index.html

Everyone loves sea shells and has special memories of a vacation spent at the beach. I look forward to hearing from all seashell collectors. Please drop me an email and let me know about your collection.

These are available in cards for sell and small glicee prints on my web store. Please email or call me for pricing.  Phyllis O'Shields O'Shields Fine Art

"Cactus Heat" by Vonnie Kohn, oil on canvas, landscape, desert flowers, prickly pear

"Cactus Heat"
12 x 16"
Gallery Wrap
(no frame needed)

Many do not see the desert as being a beautiful place. Having lived in the desert in my early years, I was able to observe the changing of the prickly pear cactus during its "flowering" season. I noticed this desert plant on my way to an art gallery & stopped to take a photo. As the day was in the triple digits, I felt the title was a fitting name for my newest painting..."Cactus Heat"

"CALIFORNIA SUMMER #4" by gerald schwartz

Just another on my California swimming pool series...  For me it is about shapes, textures & shadows... I did four at this point, maybe more later on this summer.  I am still at one of the best two month long art show in the country,  "THE FESTIVAL OF ARTS"  in Laguna Beach CA, what a privilege to be a part of...  This is how I spend my summers...

The Independent Trio by Christiane Kingsley

The Independent Trio
I love cherries with their bright lustrous colors! I also love painting lace..So, painting cherries on linen lace is a real pleasure! I even had a lot of fun setting up this still life in my studio...I have to admit that I had more cherries than this when I started taking the pictures:-) Those cherries were delicious!

This original watercolor painting is on Arches Cold Press watercolor paper and is painted with professional quality paints. I have matted it with an Artic white mat with an inner border in black....this really brings out the color of the plate and accentuates the contrast with the red cherries. The mat will fit an 11" X 14" frame. The actual dimensions of the painting are just over 8" X 10".

Here is a view of the painting with the matting.
Price: $100 US
Shipping in North America: $10  Please email me for cost of shipping outside of North America.

Tuscany Sunflower Study Pastel Phyllis O'Shields Contemporary Impressionism

Tuscany Sunflower Series VII

Pastel 12 x 16 without mat
Canson Mi-Teintes
En Plein Air Study
Phyllis O'Shields Contemporary Impressionism
Copyright 2011 PO'Shields

My Inspiration: Last of Summer Sunflowers on the back roads of Tuscany.
When visiting Tuscany each year I paint Sunflowers, Lavender and Olive Trees.
Each Tuscan Sunflower is different with it's own personality, thus I usually sketch en plein air
the one that jumps out at me.

There is nothing more beautiful than the Tuscan fields of golden sunflowers surrounding a golden rustic house with a terra cotta roof.

These are views that I use in large paintings, but for the sketching en plein air there is always one sunflower among the many that calls out to be drawn.

I will be posting over the next few weeks series of these plein air studies sketches.

Bravissima!

An oasis of inspiration Jardin Majorelle Marrakesh

Majorelle Marrakesh an oasis of inspiration

"Once you have traveled, the voyage never ends, but is
played out over and over again in the quietest
chambers, that the mind can
never break off from the journey." Pat Conroy

A recent trip to Morocco was bountiful in inspiration from the rich colours,
decorated fountains and tiles, elegant architecture , busy streets
to the varied landscape that ranged from
the Atlantic coast though olive groves
to the dry expanse of  Sahara desert.

I delighted in all the  varied sights, the colours , textures and
contrast of Morocco but  found the
 Jardin Majorelle  in Marrakesh
to be particularly inspirational

Jardin Majorelle is an oasis of calm with lush foliage and
vivid colour in the center of Marrakech .
Created in 1924 by Jacques Majorelle a French painter and
opened to the public in 1947.The garden it has the feel
of being a living painting with a distinctive
 artistic flair
in the layout and combination
of the traditional and modern.
After Jacques Majorelle's death in 1962
the garden has been funded by the
Foundation Pierre Berge and
the late Yves Saint Laurent .
A memorial to Yves Saint Laurent is
within the grounds of the garden.

The garden is not only a beautiful and meditative space
but also very inspirational to my
own creativity .
It  appealed at every level to my painter's eye.
 Every niche and pathway
offers a sensory delight
with the bright acid colored pots ,
deep blue low walls and
abundant greenery of the plants.

Here are a selection of my photographs
from this exquisite garden.

More photographs of the Jardin Majorelle  can be seen

Far Niente vineyards

'Far Niente, Oakville, CA"  10" x  3.75"  pastel painting

Far Niente winery owns 5 vineyards. According to the description on their website this view is part of their John C. Sullenger Vineyard which covers 42 acres. Their wine prices are a bit out of my range but I hear they make exceptional wine.
As far as the painting - I wanted to abstract this scene considering the limited view. I'm pleased with the feel of it.My husband is away on business in northern Washington state and has been photographing vineyards for me. He's been taking some up-close shots which I can not get through Google street views. I'm very excited to see and paint them!

I like the shot of color the pear provides against the dramatic black and white zebra skin pattern. Life has been a series of 'situations' for myself and studio mates at 79 Beekman Street in Saratoga. We've finally been able to come up with a schedule for staying open at least for the racing/tourist season  for the month of August. Our studio hours are 10-7. I am planning to be there most days from 12:30 - 4. If you are in the area, stop in for a visual treat. Beekman Street is so beautiful in the summer with flowers lining the streets of the shops and galleries.

Today's Quotation: "The simplicity of form, the drama of rich, intense colour, the joy of challenge, and the challenge of endurance... The piece, when it is over, is not what is made, but how it is made."

Beach Original Painting Texture People Walking by Iowa Artist Toni Grote

Todays painting is called "Alone Time" and is an original acrylic on canvas 8x10. I put a couple of people on the beach and lots of texture in the ocean. To see a closeup pic or purchase then please click here.

ABSTRACTED CONTEMPORARY HORSE PAINTING

It is amazing how artist's MOJO works and where the inspiration comes from. I found this pretty photo (see bottom of this post) in the image library on wetcavas site. The muscular buttocks spoke to me and the painting was born. Again, I wanted to stick to a very limited color palette. The colors used to create this beauty were: Royal Blue, Indigo, Carmine Lake, Naples Yellow and Naples Yellow Golden and Titanium White.
