While walking up the stairs of a bookstore I looked down and saw this great view of a man reading on the ground level. The books are bathing in light giving the painting this wonderful atmosphere I absolutely love. If you're interested in purchasing Downstairs you can enter the auction here.

Yesterday I finished decorating for the show with my great-uncle Jopie Huisman. It looks fantastic! I got my own space upstairs showing 15 larger scaled paintings, including 3 brand new ones which I'm going to present to you next week. I will also post pictures then. The show opens 14.00h, saturday april 9, sure hope you can make it!

kind regards, Gerard

EXPRESS YOURSELF by Linda Popple

Click HERE to view my blog.

This was painted for Sharon Hodges' moleskin. Her theme is "Express Yourself" which I do each time I paint. Painting in these moleskins is fun, but a bit stressful. This time my palette fell upside down on Sharon's open book. The page next to my painting has splotches of color and now needs to dry. I apologize, Sharon! I'm a klutz! I hope I get better at this or I'll never be asked to paint in anyone's moleskin again. The moleskins are found at TEXAS MOLESKIN ROUND-UP. You can see some fantastic work there and enjoy following the moleskins!

Cable Car by Bill Brauker

Cable Car

For awhile I have been kicking around the idea of painting iconic American images. This is the first of those paintings.

San Francisco is a wonderful place to visit. So much to see and do. If you have never been there. Go.

Contact me if you are interested in purchasing this painting for $300(free shipping). Credit cards welcomed.

Grapes of Wrath by Linda Hunt

Grapes are very challenging to paint and this painting was no exception. The title came right to me as I was working! I usually struggle a bit with titles. I backlit the still life so that I could get the transluscent quality of the grapes.

Johnson City 3 by Kirk Witmer

Oil on archival canvas panel - 6x8"

The pathways in the Johnson City settlement just seem to wind on and on. October was a good time of year for a nice long walk. I thought this painting has pretty good "aerial perspective" and really shows the distance and the length of this path. (Location: 30.2745,-98.414795)

A Cat Painting in Acrylic by Pattie Wall

Jacques
8" x 8"
acrylic on wrapped canvas
a Siamese cat portrait by Pattie Wall
This one is painted from a photo supplied by the owner.  Painting the eyes first, is always how I start, if that doesn't work out I don't go on until it does.
This one captured amazement in his eyes,
that something (the camera) was trained on his face.  That expression was what prompted me to paint him!

WIP-2 Success & Prosperity by DEE LESSARD

Success & Prosperity    oil by Dee Lessard

I have done the under-painting in the brown monochromatic color mix of half raw umber and half Burnt umber (Adding white to lighten the mixture where needed.) The whole thing starts to take shape based solely on tonal value, much like a black & white image only in sepia color instead. By mapping out values it helps to see where your contrasts are and how your eye travels around the painting.

I had this stage of the painting done for quite some time and wasn't really thrilled with it. Sometimes I have to "live with" something for a while and figure out why I feel the way I do.  As an artist we are always evolving ad growing (at least that's what we hope for and what's fun about art). And recently I figured out why it lost interest for me and was able to go back in and fix it! The problem? There were 2 round things next to each other and was not interesting at all. In case you are wondering...the white "round" thing in front was a type of peonies. As you will see in my next posting. I changed it to a different type of peonies.

If you are interested in following this process by e-mail (and haven't signed up yet) you can sign up on my blog on the right column.

SCILLA

SCILLA
oil on canvas
8" x 6"

Scilla or Siberian Squill does actually grow in Siberia.  This tiny but very hardy flower is probably coming up somewhere in your yard if you have some property in the North East.  It not only comes up every year but spreads in mysterious ways all over the place.  I look forward to discovering what new place it will pop up every year.  Last evening I passed a front yard completely covered in blue.  What a treat.

Olives and Lady Bugs

I started this painting thinking about dots and drew the cups. When I decided to make them green with red dots my mind went to olives. I added the lady bugs because they look like red dots, then the dragonfly because I gave it red dots for eyes. Now that I have painted this I know I want to paint a few more making some changes with them a s I go. Oh the wonders of an artist with a wondering mind.

"Liz in Yellow" by Kathryn Townsend

"Liz in Yellow", 12 x 9 In, Oil on Panel
This is from the series I am doing of my daughters. I am not trying to make these paintings perfect, but rather catch the feeling. I'm not sure it portrays how she was feeling or how I am feeling! When they pose for me for photographs they do lots of different angles in the light and then run off to whatever else they are doing.

Horse, Equine Oil Painting in Process....

Horse
16x20 inches
Oil painting in process

Here is my second attempt at a horse painting. So far, I like it quite a bit. As usual, I had a considerable amount of resistance and procrastinated endlessly before I stepped into my studio to work on it. I'd completed most of the horse and still had the background and mane to finish. I struggled with what to do for the background. I began to see colors,...started with the red on the upper left...skipped down to the lower left and painted in blue and purple, added some white and yellow to blend...and fooled around a bit until I was tired. So here we are....with much less resistance.
I'm almost finished the the large still life I'm working on in my downtown studio and will bring this painting with me tomorrow to work on.

I realize it is not finished yet, but I'd love to hear your ideas for a name....email me any names for this painting might that pop into your awareness....I might choose one...

Today's Quotation: "The essential joy of being with horses is that it brings us in contact with the rare elements of grace, beauty, spirit, and fire."

Limes and Apple by Dave Froude

Title: Limes and apple 2
Medium: Acrylic 9 x 12

The last painting I did so well, I thought I would try something similar, However this time, the limes, had been through enough sitting under the hot studio lights that they revolted in this one. We did come to an agreement after I said I don't like you and you don't like me but we have to get through this, so they promised to stick around a little while longer but fought with me the whole time. So here is the second version of this subject, this one turned out better than I thought it would judging by how it started, I keep telling myself the fight is worth the effort.

Enjoy

I've had a few ..... ok, MANY wipe-outs this last week! I think I'm back on track. I paid a price for being gone for nine days over spring break and it's been hard to get my juju back. Vacation was worth a few bad paintings and the frustration that comes with it. We visited with family in Florida and Alabama and really had a great time. But, as always, it is good to return home. :-)

Tinajon at the Door or Welcome Home Bougainvellia

Copyright 2011 Maria Soto Robbins

I admire artists that have a  knack for creatively naming their paintings. Not me.  I'm afraid that I'm very unimaginative when it comes to titles.  It is what it is, as far as I'm concerned and my title usually reflects that.  So, I thought it would be fun to ask my Facebook Friends to suggest some titles for this painting. Here are some of the good suggestions:
  • Welcome Home
  • Tranquility
  • Peacefulness
  • My Secret Place
  • Tinajon en la Puerta (Earthen Jar at the Door)
  • Tinajon de Verano (Summer Earthen Jar)
I couldn't settle on just one so it has two names. It is what it is!
