Well I am finally back to painting after a very long and serious illness. For 5 weeks I had a really bad flu with high fever, that turned into bronchitis that turned into phenomena. My husband had it too. It was the sickest I have been in over 20 years and was scary at times.

All I could think about when I was sick was time. All the time I was loosing painting, designing, online, researching, marketing and so on. Time to get more medicine, time to get more tea, time to turn the heat up to 1000 degrees, time, time , time!! It snowed here in the Pocono Mountains the whole time too!

At least my brain was still working while nothing else was. So with all this said about time, of course I thought of Dali and his crazy clocks. While laying there trying to sleep with no success I decided to design a Dali in my head. I was too sick to even quickly sketch it so having to keep all the details in my head, I finally fell asleep as I forgot for a few minutes how lousy I felt. I dreamed about Dail and time and in the am, "Time for Dali" was ready to go as soon as I was!!

The book titles here are Dali, Clocks and Time.

I love to sit in front of my fireplace with a stack of art history and artist biography books and sip and nice wine while I read and live vicariously through the artists.

No, I do not do "everything" online. It is still nice to read a book.

This is how I create a lot of my paintings. Can you image a whole wall like this that is a giant clock? Mr clock in the corner has a personality of his own and almost looks like he has an attitude! Hummmm.... wonder who that guy is sitting on the sofa? Can be anyone we want it to be! Enjoy!

Thanks to all my friends, fans an collectors that sent such good wishes, cards and comments.

It's nice to know your loved and appreciated.

I'm moving slow...but I'm moving! Stay tuned, more to come.

Salvador Domènec Felip Jacint Dalí i Domènech, Marquis of Dalí de Púbol (May 11, 1904 – January 23, 1989), commonly known as Salvador Dalí (Catalan pronunciation: was a prominent Spanish Catalan surrealist painter born in Figureres.

Out of the hundreds of paintings created by Salvador Dali, his iconic depiction of melting clocks is no doubt the most famous.

Entitled The Persistence of Memory, this painting served as both an outlet for his imagination and a simple allegory—that time is meaningless.

Dali claimed (like most surrealists) that his images were “dream sequences” or inspired by his subconscious. Surrealism was a popular movement in the mid-1900s that attempted to create art which was “truer” than life. They did this by avoiding logic and reason, which were considered hindrances to creativity. It’s an idea which is still somewhat believed today.

"White Flowers with Apples" by Kathryn Townsend

"White Flowers with Apples", 12 x 12 In, Oil on Museum Board
The daily painting blog is strange. It is so motivating related to getting into the studio with brush in hand every possible day. But it also feels risky sometimes, because the daily painter, at least to a certain extent, lays it all out there. That's why I put the quote from George Bernard Shaw at the top of my blog and why I keep remembering it because being on the risky side of things is in the end, a better learning place than the safe side of things. Sometimes I want to finish the painting less and not worry about it. Sometimes I want to use big sloppy brushstrokes and not think about it. This painting was mainly a result of "6 x 6" size fatigue. Its "12 x 12", four times bigger, but in the scheme of things, still pretty small.

Plein Air Painting of Puppy's Pansies by Kathy Cousart

It was gorgeous weather here this weekend and I spent it outside plein air painting.  I had gotten these sweet white pansies to plant in memory of Maggie and thought they were so pretty sitting on the rock wall.  It was a bit windy and they were blowing around as dainty as could be.  I had fun painting them and loved being outside.  Catching the sunlight and patterns was the best!

The Prophet- Portrait of Dutch Right-Wing and Anti-Islam Politician Geert Wilders with Muslims

The Prophet

Portrait of Dutch right-wing and
anti-islam politician Geert Wilders
with Muslims

G. Boersma
acrylics on masonite
48" x 36" or 122 x 91,5 cm
2011

Here it is: the end of the mystery tour. If you put all the pieces of the puzzle together you get this portrait of Dutch right-wing and anti-islam politician Geert Wilders. With the elections coming up this wednesday I thought it would be a perfect time to show it.

I jokingly entitled my painting The Prophet as a lot of people in the Netherlands see him that way. From a distance it shows Wilders smiling, up close it’s obvious that the painting is build up of numerous smaller portraits. Portraits of muslims that is. Over 750 are staring at viewer. A very precise work of art which took me over 3 months to create.

The painting makes clear that Wilders and muslims are inextricable bound up with each other. The politician would have never gotten this far if it wasn’t for the muslims. Unwillingly they build up Wilders’ reputation. A thank you would be in order. Without his pride horse Wilders would be lost. Although he probably would find some other group to take its place, like Zionists, Indonesians, Frisians or perhaps East-Europeans, who knows.

My work expresses the idea that no group should be excluded from society. I often say muslims are the new Jews. Meaning that they are now getting the blame for almost everything that goes wrong in Western society, we all know how that ended up for the Jews. Of course the comparison ends there.

I would love to send my painting on a campaign through the country, but for now it can be only seen at my studio during working hours, in the evenings and weekends with appointment only.

All larger detail pictures and the painting itself can be seen together here. I would love it if you could assist me in getting the painting out there, as I feel this is an important image a lot of people need to see. If you feel the same please feel free to share it, post it on your website or contact me for any additional things you might need. I'm looking forward hearing from you!

"Loading Rocks" by Kathryn Townsend

"Loading Rocks", 12 x 8 In, Oil on Panel
This painting was from my figure series about a week ago. I was up in Edmonds today, about an hour and a half drive from here, at the Plein Air Washington Paint-in, but it was too dark to take photos once I got home and I'm not sure how the paintings turned out anyway! This figure painting was another one where I used a photo I took a few years ago of a worker in Northeast China, deciding that it was interesting enough to try to make something of it. It's definitely a study and I had fun doing it--a guy and some rocks--not something I would ordinarily think about painting.

I continue to be very enthused painting these large still life paintings. I love it! I can be fairly compulsive...like just painting lemons and limes on and on and on....but.... I do discipline myself and rotate with pears, oranges and apples...any of which can also trigger this compulsion. At this point though...getting a bit older and caring close to zero about what critics say....I just might do lemons and limes for the next year....or pears...or....

Today's Quotation: It's three o'clock in the morning, your back hurts, your arm hurts, you've been in there for ten hours, and there are no sounds except for the occasional fire truck. Finally, you put the brush down and ask yourself, 'Man, what am I doing here?'

Canvas Capers

Oversized Canvas Giclee Prints of an Arctic Char Study
and a Colorful Canvas Giclee of a Lahontan Cutthroat Trout.
Closeup of the Lahontan Cutthroat Trout Canvas Giclee.

On some of my latest prints, my Giclee Printer-
Jim Davis at Art Repro Services Had fun with
my request for a few Canvas Giclees to see how
my clients and myself would like canvas
instead of Paper Giclee Prints. He cam back with an assortment
of fun prints that added more than a touch of color to my art!

I then went to one of my galleries-
Smith Custom Framing & Fine Art Gallery
in New Cumberland, PA
And asked the owner, Debbie Smith to help. She had a free hand
in coming up with a way to frame and present this new endeavor.
(She is the lady pictured above)
According to her- she framed to Giclee Canvas Prints with these choices:

The original sized Lahontan Cutthroat Trout with
a neon yellow/green background was stacked with 3 frames.
The outer frame is done with Larson Juhl's Taffy line in Lemon,
the next frame is mottled vibrant green by Presto Moulding
and accented with a Larson Juhl Light Blue Confetti fillet
to bring out the fine outline around the fish.

The 2 oversized Giclee Canvas Prints of the Arctic Char
are framed with Larson Juhl's fun and fanciful Taffy Profile.
On the Black Background version, Debbie used a Raspberry Taffy
to make the Char 'pop'
and on the white background version, she used
the Green Apple Taffy moulding, complementing
the Arctic Char dominant colors.
The startling differences in the 2 Char Prints is amazing!

While I have done a few canvas prints in the past,
about a year or two ago, I never experimented with
colors and frames. Since I am excusively a
transparent watercolorist, I am not use to what was available
with the presentation found with using canvas instead of
a paper print or original double matted under glass.
This has been a real eye opener-
that I wanted to pass onto you. I am looking for
more fun ways to explore my presentation of my art!

The Corners Of My Mind by WA Contemporary Abstract Artist Itaya

Title - The Corners Of My Mind
Size - 7.5 in. x 11 in.
Acrylic Paint on Heavy Art Paper
Price - $70
(plus shipping)

What do the corners of your mind look like do you think? What do you suppose is tucked away in the millions of little cubbyholes that must be there? Perhaps there are memories of special gifts received, snapshots of family gatherings, or the feeling of holding a new born babe. I can't help but wonder all that would come to the surface if we would take more time to stop and do some sorting and culling of those cubbyholes in our minds. We spend countless hours over our lifetime organizing and rearranging things in our physical worlds. Maybe we need to spend a bit more quiet time pondering the treasures we have tucked away, way back in the corners of our mind. :)

This is an original abstract expressionist painting filled with vibrant colors.

Thankfully my daughter-in-law Samantha had an awesome photo she posted to her facebook page! I had limited time today   and needed a subject which didn't require much detail work. This was the perfect subject.
Thank you Sam!

Speaking of facebook I recently created a page for my art. Facebook requires 25 "likes" for the page to have a name for the url. I would appreciate it so much if you would "like" my page at this link if you have a facebook account. That is if you like my work  ;-)

I also have an update on that page of the "Women in the Arts" show which will take place next month.

"On the Bike" by Kathryn Townsend

"On the Bike", 6 x 6 In, Oil on Museum Board NFS
Back to the small paintings, this is from a photograph I took in a rural farming area of Northeastern China--a photo that I've looked at for a long time and wondered if I could make anything of it. So it was fun just going at it.

I learned a new trick today! ...how to superimpose my paintings over furniture....how cool is that!  This is perfect to show the ratio of these larger still life paintings to their environment. This piece, Camouflage 11, and three others are currently gracing the bold and brightly colored walls of our local health food shop cafe...Four Seasons Natural Foods and Cafe. If you are in Saratoga Springs, stop in for a healthy lunch and take a look. They have a great buffet.

On another totally unrelated note...we were taken by surprise today with a snowstorm that is probably the worst we've had all year. They were predicting 3-4 inches and it may go up to 12 or more. I did more driving around in it than I'd like...I had two prints to ship out, a payment that I make in person that was due today, left my cell phone at the studio in town and other stuff....If not for all that I would have stayed home. Some roads weren't plowed, and of course I was one of the first to drive on them. It was blinding at times...all that white on the road and coming out of the heavens....difficult to stay on the road....but I'm back, safe and sound and looking forward to watching Fringe later tonight after I begin another painting here at my home studio.

Today's Quotation: "I do not pursue art. It pursues me. It dogs me throughout my day and never rests. It is the beast I must feed that is never content. I did not choose to be an artist, to create, to express what is in my head. It chose me and I am its slave."

Pitchers and Lemons

I painted this in response to the challenge on Rookie Painter.   Like several others, I rearranged the vases---primarily because I had a square panel, and I didn't think the original version would fit very well.  I'm okay with the red pitcher, but not too pleased with the blue one.  I kept re-doing it.  But at some point, I have to quit for the day!   The red pitcher was primarily cadmium red light, which I darkened with alizarin crimson and burnt sienna.  I lightened it with cadmium yellow, as I had done with the plums.

This painting is very tight.  The more time I have to paint, the tighter and fussier I get.  I keep talking to myself about it, but I seem to ignore myself.

That reminds me of a song from Alice in Wonderland called "Good Advice".    I always thought it was so cute!
