I spied these two little girls one day at the beach...

giggling, dashing and scampering after the waves.

Racing back and forth, the game wore on...

and then sadly, the waves were gone.

Lemon Trio by Virginia Floyd

Add caption

I wanted to explore painting fabric, so I laid these three lemons on a white tea towel.  The background is the dark gray of my light box.

Claire Christinel said that in a workshop she learned that she should look at values not just relative to the object, but also relative to the values in the rest of the composition.

I was thinking about that today as I was painting.  The edges of the lemons looked very dark against the white cloth.   I also thought some of the shadows of the cloth looked almost as dark as the background.

I've painted lots of lemons (there are usually always some in the refrigerator).  When I compare this painting to the others, I realized that I painted all the lemons differently, with different colors of shadows and highlights.  They all look like lemons, though.   The values are more important than the colors.  People say that all the time, but when I lined up my lemon paintings I could really see it.

"Yellow Teapot" by Kathryn Townsend

"Yellow Teapot", 10 x 10 In, Oil on Museum Board
This little teapot was another item I got the other day at the antique co-op. Other than mugs, a lot of the still life items I have are pretty colorless, and I like to paint items with intense color. But I really struggled to find color harmony with this painting.

Lurcher oil painting by Anne Zoutsos

Santa - 12" x 8" oil on hardboard/masonite

Here is my latest commission - this painting being of a lurcher. When you look at this bitch's expressive, sensitive face, it is hard to accept that she was a rescue case suffering from a severe injury when her new family took her on. She blossomed and thrived in their care and has been a very happy family pet and number one dog for many years now.

If you would like to commission a portrait of your pet, please visit my website - and either click on 'Commissions' for basic information or 'Commissions in detail' for more information about the process. You can also email me at info@azpaintings.com and I will be happy to help and answer any questions you may have.

Acrylic Avian Love Valentines by Mary Hughes

Acrylic Gouache on Watercolor Paper

Heading into the Valentines season I thought I'd share some avian love paintings. It's easy to take the interaction of our pets and stick humanistic qualities and situations on them. This one is of two parakeets. An in your face sort of insecurity... do you still love me?, is everything ok? are you mad?

I'm trying to loosen up and I think I succeeded with this one. I had a blast pushing the paint around and softening edges. This bowl belongs to a friend and she was so kind to let me paint it - thank you, Linda! I want to paint it again. It really is beautiful and such character with the chip.

When I first saw this woman standing in front of a shop window I actually thought she was one of the dummies showing the latest style in fashion. I soon realised she's nothing of the sort, she's not a dummy, she has a head. A real person full of feelings and thoughts and definitely not for sale. The spotlight should be aimed at her and not at the lifeless goodies behind her.

Floral Still Life Realism Oil Painting, In The Pink by Marina Petro

In The Pink
16: x 20"
Oil painting on stretched canvas

Only one in the entire universe...and it could be yours!

Certificate of Authenticity provided with every painting purchased.
Purchase securely HERE or EMAIL ME for other purchasing options and inquiries.

I painted this beautiful (and quite difficult) painting prior to my teachers death. I thought it was going to be a quick paint but, as usual, he began by saying....."Be patient, Marina and...be very very careful..." I thought,  oh, God....not again...patience and careful....very difficult for an Aries.

Not sure why I've waited so long to actually post it here. When I heard that 48 states were going to be hit with another snowstorm this week, I decided this is the time to bring a bit of warmth and memories of sunny days to my subscribers. The inspiration for this painting was a photograph that my daughter, Andrea, took of the Echinacea/Coneflowers in her garden. Incidentally, the color pink is said to denote, love, a childlike nature, innocence, friendship...and other sweet things...Can you feel it?

Today's Quotation:  "Your love should never be offered to the mouth of a stranger...Only to someone who has the valor and daring to cut pieces of their soul off with a knife, then weave them into a blanket to protect you."

January Trees by Helen Read

January Trees,  8x6" Oil Pastel on paper
©2011, Helen Read
ready to frame

I'm sorry to say that January has just flown by!   Its been a very busy month, as it always is ... I've been working on a larger painting - and now, this small one in pastel to be posted before the end of the month is here!  (which is tomorrow!)    While it might seem that I've been idle, that's not exactly true!
My classroom duties have kept me very busy - as well as other home and family things.

This one is small and rather simple - done in an almost impressionistic style.  I like oil pastels because they are so blend-able, and they mix on the paper almost like paint on a canvas.  The subject matter is about all I can see  -  snow on everything!

stangl ware still life by Ria Hills

stangl ware acrylic painting
5" by 5" daily acrylic painting
painted on a 3/8" thickness hardboard panel with a hanging slot on the back

Last week I went shopping for still life props and found some treasures. The plate is from TJMaxx. The cup and saucer, along with some others were at a local antique consignment store.
I've collected Stangl ware for years but I never saw this particular pattern. Love it!

It took a bit longer than I would normally spend on a daily painting but I couldn't stop adding detail. Fun!

The window between the two bookcases really makes todays painting tick for me. While you can't be sure whether the man and woman are staring at the books or out of the window, I like the think the latter is true. Books are windows to another world and to me my couple is already there.

"Pots with Green Apple" by Kathryn Townsend

"Pots with Green Apple", 12 x 12 In, Oil on Panel
I am thinking about the end of January, for me the longest month in the year. It is the only month that the guy who mows my lawn gets to do something else, like mulching, because in the Pacific Northwest it is the only month that the grass doesn't really grow. I'm looking forward to the small indications of spring that February brings.

"Rainbow in a Blue Vase"

When I was a younger artist, my mother-in-law had several bushes of hydrangeas planted in her front garden bed. She called them "snowball" plants. In memory of her, I planted a hydrangea bush in my front yard a few years ago. In our Texas heat, I had to take special care to put this bush in a partially shaded area...not an easy feat when there are few trees in the front yard! It has never done well; however, this year it was completely loaded with all the colors of this variety of flower--blues, pinks, lavendars, & even whites! As a homage to Spring (& my mother-in-law), I have put this Rainbow in a Blue Vase. Enjoy!

I love making these paintings of bookshelves. You always have to look for just the right composition, otherwise the whole painting fails. At times I feel like Mondriaan must have felt. As a matter of fact one could see the still life paintings of books as a realistic Mondriaan, if you don't count the diagonal books that is.
