Staggering tax-rise for visual arts in The Netherlands

This last day of 2010 is one filled with mixed emotions. On the one hand I'm happy, I'm close to completing my larger sized painting, an extremely complicated piece which potentially can stir up things a bit. I got a couple of great shows coming up as well and I can't wait to get started on my daily paintings again. As a matter of fact, my new year's resolution is to make one each day again like I used to do. All good things!

But on the other hand I'm saddened by the fact that our government here in The Netherlands decided to go through with the tax-rise for arts and culture. I just heard they had an emergency meeting this week. Taxes for visual arts will rise from 6% to a staggering 19% starting tomorrow! Can you believe that? Not only is this an outrageous high tax-rise, but our government gave us about 3 days to prepare ourselves for this!

Taxes for performing artists won't rise untill july 2011. This too amazes me, why make a difference between performing artists and visual artists? That's sure doesn't strike me as fair. Well, the whole tax-rise doesn't strike me as fair.

Fair or not, taxes will rise tomorrow. After giving it much thought I decided not to let my beloved collectors take all the heat, meaning I will not raise prices for my daily paintings, but I'm afraid I have to for my larger scaled paintings. This means my income level probably will drop a bit. Of course I'm not pleased with this to say the least, but it's the best solution I can come up with for my collectors.

To end on a positive note: I completely changed my packaging for my daily paintings. They now come in a luxurious white gift box filled with 2 layers of foam. A certificate of authenticity and a free digital book on cd are included as well. The first paintings to have this new packaging are currently being auctioned on ebay. You can check out the auctions here.

Sarah Bowie, a collector of my work, recently quoted me in her article about
'Brown as color mix'. A nice read on this last day of 2010!

I wish you all a happy new year and make sure to have some fun tonight! Be safe and I will see you again this monday!

kind regards, Gerard

Slowly, the hypnotic beats pulsed.

With eyes closed, I let the sounds carry me away

as the interplay of the instruments embodied my soul.

And the sounds swelled as the colors raged.

I a particularly fond of this painting. The detail on the bird's feathers turned out beautifully. It is difficult to see it in this photo. I have it displayed in my gallery and it is receiving many wonderful comments. Crows, Ravens, and other blackbirds evoke a deep feeling of mystery for me.

Here is an article by Charlotte Kuchinsky entitled, Uncovering The Myth Surrounding Ravens, Blackbirds, and Crows.

"Dried Rose" by Kathryn Townsend

"Dried Rose", 12 x 10, Oil on Museum Board
The objects that I put in the still life are are usually not so important themselves as they are a means to an end--the representation of light, color, feeling, mood, etc. But in this case, the bottle has an interesting provenance--I got it from my Aunt's beach on a river inlet in North Carolina in 2001 after a big hurricane had unearthed a treasure trove of old glass bottles. So these are three disparate objects brought together with no particular purpose other than they contain specific memories for me: the glass bottle, the hand thrown pot from my art student days and the dried up rose from my garden that I found on the shelf stuck in another pot.

Venetian Doorway - Original Watercolor by Canadian Painter Christiane Kingsley

Venetian Doorway - Original Watercolor by Christiane Kingsley

 SOLD

I love the transparency, the light, the unpredictable color blending that occur on the watercolor paper. My favorite inspiration is the city of Venice, that jewel of the Adriatic: after about six weeks in that city over the last 3 years, I have hundreds of my own photo references just waiting to be painted. I have been working on a series of Venice paintings called (not too creatively) "Memories of Venice".

Here is one of my favorite painting of that series:
Venetian Doorway.
Arches watercolor paper 140 lb Cold Press
W&N and Da Vinci professional grade watercolor paints,
Approx. 14” X 19”
In private collection.

The intricate metalwork, the textures of the crumbling brickwork, the unique green of the canal waters under that very special Venice light…all this fading beauty called to be painted.

This painting was done in a modified pouring technique which allows colors to mix beautifully.

This original is sold, but check some of my other paintings: on the Artists International Gallery or on one of my blog pages.

Printed versions of this painting are available on my Red Bubble site in the following formats:

I invite you to visit my blog to see works in progress and discussion of my process. Please email me if you have any questions.

Mashed Potatoes to the Stream Version of Broccoli, Carrots and  Beets.

Missing You by Angela Sullivan

Missing You
I saw you just yesterday. You came for a visit and we had such a grand time.
We played and romped in the thick long grass. We chased butterflies which
came close to us and then we rested in the shade of the big oak tree.
What fun, yet now I find myself with moist eyes as I realize that
the pain and loneliness that I feel comes from missing you.

"Two Roses" by Kathryn Townsend

"Two Roses", 10 x 8 In, Oil on Museum Board
Sometimes I get to the end of the day and I can't think of anything to say about my painting--my mind is just a big blank! So here goes--this painting was a fast one--big strokes put down and pretty much left alone, which is not always the case when I paint, as I'm a big believer in judicious scraping. Almost all the rose paintings have been done under my big white skylight with natural light, which I much prefer to light bulbs but limits the painting time to daylight hours--ending about 4 pm in the afternoon during these days.

Mary Hughes Oil Painting "Sliced" Plum

8" x 8" Oil on Canvas:
"Sliced"

$100.00

I like to think when I start with an idea that it will look like I've imagined but somehow elements come into play that I hadn't planned. Starting with the idea to paint fruit on a white plate in the sun I hadn't thought of how much shadow there would be indoors, but I decided to go with it rather than create more lighting from the inside. It was fun to paint the reflections and shadows that didn't develop in my imagination. This is the second painting in this mini series of 2. The first is Plum Breakfast also available. This would make a nice coupling.

The background is not black paint but a dark combination of reds, browns and blues to make up a rich reddish brown that at a distance looks black.

Hi There! I know you have not seen me in a while.
I have been hidden away at the bottom of the toy box.
As my people found me while looking for toys which could be
given to the Salvation Army's Toy Rescue which provides toys
to the poor at Christmas. There I was. I put on my best face and made
sure that my eyes twinkled as she held me. Oh Yea! it works every time.
So here I am still at home. All comfy on the toy shelf. I will try it again next year.

Pearl
I was told by my grandma that a pearl is a treasure to be proud of.
She is the one who named me pearl. My eyes she used to say, were full
of life and joy, How you may ask because after all I am only a stuffed teddy bear.
Well the secret you see is that my eyes reflect the beauty of the one who holds me
close and loves me with all their heart. My eyes reflect the beauty of a child's soul.
My name is Pearl and I hold rare beauty.

TRIATHLETE oil painting by Dee Lessard

Triathlete   11x14    by Dee Lessard

I have a cousin, who completed her second Ironman triathlon. To honor her accomplishments her family wanted me to paint something to depict this. This is what I came up with.  I have participated in a sprint triathlon and know how challenging that one is. I can't even imagine doing a full Ironman! (Ironman is  a 2.5 mile swim followed by a 112 mile which is followed up by a 26 mile marathon run) Can you imagine?!

I love painting pears more than any other fruit. There's just something about them that continues to inspire me to immortalize them on canvas. I haven't been as lucky this year as I have in the past finding pears (or any other fruits) with leaves attached.

I've decided to repaint some of the smaller paintings I've done, that I really like a lot, on larger canvases. I'll be starting on them this week in preparation for a local exhibit in February.

I received a notice from Zazzle that they've  added necklaces to their line of products so...I've been busy creating a line of (mostly) Angel Necklaces from my original oil paintings. The necklaces come in round and square designs with a sterling silver plated setting. Simple and beautiful.

Today's Quotation: "For he shall give his angels charge over thee to keep thee in all thy ways. On their hands they will bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone"

I'm trying to keep it simple during the holidays and interestingly, I find that simplicity of design is good for the practice of brush strokes and paint application. In many ways this is the therapeutic part of painting--just slapping around the paint like a kid.
