I had an idea to use the colors of Hawaii, the red earth, the various shades of sand, sea and sky in an abstract piece. I love the turtles and have been able to swim with them a few times, no touching of course. Because of conservation efforts the population has increased in recent years. They are so beautiful and have been here for so long an age and hopefully will continue to thrive in these Hawaiian waters.

Still life painting is a challenge for me--deciding what to paint, how to set it up, all the gear required in the studio to get a good set up and good lighting. I have two big skylights but natural lighting is hard to come by in the Pacific Northwest during the dark months. So I use really big pieces of foam core to create a box around my table for the set-up, which works pretty well until my cat comes in and bats the foam core around because he's hungry. Everything about still life for me is experimental.

School House prints available

"1896 School House" is an oil painting that was part of a large commission.  It is historically based on a photo from the Ft. Collins archive (that I received permission to use) of the Stove Prairie School in northern Colorado which is still in use.  I added the students and teachers from other period photos.  Prints, Canvas giclees and cards can all be ordered through Fine Art America for as little as $18.50.  See this PDF for details.

Just by coincidence today, I discovered an app on Facebook that I've seen used before and I immediately started to play with it. It is strictly for fun but let me warn you, it sucks you in, and I lost all track of time. It is so much fun to use!

I had broken my foot a week before we left for the trip, but by the end was taking some fairly long walks in my "boot."

Two recent studies I did in a large group of watercolor and ink that I ended up happy with. I had experimented with several and some of course ended up as rubbish or to be used as recycled materials for other future mixed media pieces. I liked the differences in the subtle spirit of the first one compared to the richer mood of the second one.

The excitement of painting these butterflies brought me back to the number 1 rule in painting....ALWAYS paint what inspires you! Try it, and if it doesn't work, at least you attempted.
My inspiration for this collection was very much "jewelry-inspired." I used rich, bold, strategic colors with thick luscious palette knife strokes to enhance the tactile quality of these paintings. My intentions were that these fluttery creatures would explode off the canvas with great expression while somehow melding into the background color simultaneously. These were created as wall "jewelry" for a special nook in a home....
