My latest abstract painting on canvas seemed too monochrome to me. I didn't want to add a lot of color because I felt that doing so would lose the free textural sense already there. So I used pale washes of blue, alizarin crimson, burnt umber, and yellow-orange. I also punched up the white and titanium, and added some yellow lines, feathering and spreading them with a brush. After that, I added more emphasis to some of the colored sections by outlining them in black lines.

Daffodil Daze
original: 6"w x 8"h
Sophie’s First Daffodil
As Sophie and I
Went out for our walk
We sang silly songs
And giggled and talked
Till we came to a hill
And there by the way
Bloomed a lone daffodil
A perky yet mellow
Friendly little fellow
We bent down to sniff
The petals just a bit
But I must confess
Though our ‘sniffers’ did their best
We didn’t smell a thing
Except perhaps
A bit of Spring..........!

Lately I've been swinging wildly from one approach to the next in my abstract painting: grid structure, overall pattern, bold strokes, and in my latest: finding freedom. Maybe it's because I'm bipolar, and used to mood swings, but a new painting is often the antidote to a previous one.
Stage 1:
I continued to work in a loose manner. I painted with a brush using acrylic directly from the tube, as well as mixtures thinned with water and gloss medium. I drew lines with brown and black, brushing them over to soften the effect. I worked over the whole canvas, letting the details and movement build in a natural way. Stage two:
