Wildflower Meadow Painting by Karen Margulis

'A Wild Patch' 8x10 pastel
This pretty patch of wildflowers were growing by the side of the highway up near Murphy, North Carolina. My husband and I were on a Miata ride when I saw the riot of color. We had to pull over and get some photos. One of my goals for 2010 is to do more plein air painting so next time I won't just take pictures....I'll try to paint them! Speaking of Plein air, I have finalized the dates for my plein air workshop. It will be held the weekend of May 14,15 and 16th in Murphy, NC. I have some great locations for us to paint and lodging at a great cabin will be included. I will be posting details but if you are interested let me know and I'll email them to you.
This painting is available for $145 via Paypal. Email me at kemstudios@yahoo.com for details.

I love New Years - making resolutions, like making plans, is one of my favorite things to do. So take this cup of tea, think of all you learned in 2009, and make your plans for the new year. I look forward to being part of some of them. Happy New Year!

Happy New Year

Happy New it's time to celebrate!

I am writing down my accomplishment for 2009: my small victories and I am rejoicing in them. I hope you are celebrating also. The pounds lost, the closet cleaned, the child off to college all of your wonderful accomplishment for 2009: celebrate them now. I keep a journal and tomorrow I will write all the things that a follow through, refocus on what I missed and try to find the energy for the New Year.

Still life "The Healthy Bunch" 5"x7" oil painting by Claudia Hammer

The healthy bunch, sorta like the Brady Bunch but with less bickering and sibling rivalry.   This is the last day of the year and I hope all of you have a safe New Year's Eve and a prosperous 2010!   I've had a good year and lots of fun doing these daily paintings.   I can look back at each one and remember what I was thinking while painting them.  Sort of like a visual journal.   I hope you have enjoyed them as much as I have.   Thank you all for your continued support!  :-)

"Passing By"

6 X 6 oil on masonite

Two strangers obliviously pass each other as their
body images merge seamlessly into one. Reminds
me of how close we are to others on the Planet
whether we acknowledge it or not. The man seems
to invite the viewer to be an anonymous participant
in the moment.

Physics finds Art ~ Fractal Waterlilies by Helen Read

Fractal Waterlilies, approx 14 x 14" Watercolor on paper
Private Collection
© Helen Read

Sometimes, well- often, really, other ideas (not related to visual arts) come into play! This was such an idea! The idea of fractals and chaos theory - what that might look like visually ... how to make a composition using that idea... the result was what you see above. This kind of experimentation and playing with thoughts and ideas can be a lot of fun!

Oswaldo Guayasamín "Wine Painting," Wine Label  Painting
9 x 12 inches
Oil Painting

Connoisseur Wine Masters Series

Oswaldo Guayasamín (July 6, 1919 – March 10, 1999, Quechua Indian and Ecuadorian Master Painter.
His family was poor and his father was a carpenter. He was the first child of 10. He showed an early love for art. He created a Pan-American art and social inequalities which achieved international recognition. He held his first exhibition when he was 23, in 1942.

I admire his work and understand his passion.
This is my favorite painting of Oswaldo's. Pure passion and poverty!
I enjoyed working in this palette of colors. The background is not black. It is raw umber and sienna and is a beautiful contrast to the turquoise and golds. I used a lot of glazes on this painting to create hues and depth of color. Always better in hand than in a photo.

Still Life, "Fluffy, pondering" 6" x 6" oil painting by Claudia Hammer

"Well Scarlett, do you think I should return to work?  I've had such a nice time of lazing around.   Harry O"Green and I have been watching movies and eating buttery popcorn.    I can hear the squishing of paint tubes calling me back to the palette."    Fluffy is reluctant to start up her daily routine.  She just wants to run away to Argentina and Tango.    But that takes two!

Floral Painting of Parrot Tulips, Orange Twist, Kim Blair

Orange Twist is the portrait of a full faced, orange toned parrot tulip.  The view is looking straight down at one tulip in a short vase sitting on a swatch of striped fabric.
Parrots tulips have many unique 'looks'.  When they are fresh from the bundle they appear timid and tightly closed from the world.  Then as they relax in the warmth of the room they begin to tease you with hints of the gorgeous colours that create their petals.  Before long they open and reveal a full smile... made all the more beautiful with the countless crinkles and twists of each petal.   Exotic swirls... rich tones of orange, with hints of yellow and green peeking out here and there.  A delight to behold.

9x12 oil on canvas.  Please check out my blog for purchase and contact information.

LOTUS 2 watercolor painting by Barbara Fox

Lotus 2

These flowers are amazing! They are so perfect in their symmetry, and I love the wobbly, floppy lotus leaves hovering under them. The background on my monitor looks very black, but it is actually a greenish blue-black. (That makes sense to an artist!)

BIRD SERIES - Quail "Dan"

"DAN"

We have so many quail out here in the Southwest.  They are so fun to watch.  The little babies will follow their mother anywhere.  They just scoot on out across the road in front of you in such a hurry.  I remember one quail family followed their mother right on into my sister's house when the door was left open.  Once they realized that was not where they wanted to be, they scattered all over the living room absolutely terrified!  I guess it took hours for them to find the courage to run back out the front door, but eventually they did.

This little oil painting I just finished is actually a California quail.  He is part of my "bird series" and I named him "Dan."  It is painted on a 6"x 6" wood panel, and will be for sale at the Celebration of Fine Art show on January 16th.  ( http://celebrateart.com/ )
